Posted October 23 2009Thought for the week
“Life is not measured by
the number of breaths we take,
but by the moments
that take our breath away.” Anonymous
There has been much talk about the behaviour of Year 12 students in the media in the last two weeks. The focus on the term “muck up” day has a lot to do with this. We as parents and adults are often complicit in these activities because we love to embellish what we did when we completed Year 12 or the equivalent. As we share these stories, which we always make more exciting than the actual event was, our children think they have to do at least as well and so they gather ideas and try to go one better. Then we are all very critical of the “schools” or “students” who go a little too far. The effect of drinking ads to the problem because alcohol tends to lower inhibitions. They stop considering the possible consequences of their actions.
It is my impression that the behaviour of graduating Year 12 classes has improved dramatically and I would not be surprised if over 80% of students behave very appropriately as they celebrate the end of 14 years of schooling and the commencement of the next phase of their lives. The focus on those few negative events makes us believe that all graduating students behave in such a way.
I would like to commend our Year 12 students on the fine way in which they farewelled their school. They had some fun; they joined the staff for a cooked breakfast; they gave the school an excellent, thoughtful, humorous and moving presentation and then they cleaned up everything that they had spread around in the morning. They expressed their gratitude to their school, their parents, their teachers and their peers. They showed the community how much their school really means to them. I commend them on the respect they showed, on the class they demonstrated, and on the sensitivity they expressed to everyone.
We all wish them very ell for the exams that have now commenced. We know that they are well prepared, will perform at a high level and will make us proud. We are already proud of them and look forward to sharing their journey as they move on into the exciting world that awaits them. They are going to be a force to reckon with. A force for good!
The annual Huntingtower Fete is almost here. If any parents can support the fete by giving donations for the silent auction, are interested in sponsoring a ride or can give any help at all, we would be so grateful. Please talk to your class Fete Rep or contact the office if you can help on or before the day.
I look forward to seeing you all at the Fete on Saturday 7 November.

Bunnings Sausage Sizzle
The weather was great for the sausage sizzle on Saturday the 10th of October and although exhausting, it was a great opportunity to meet parents we didn’t know. A number of volunteers stayed on extra, up to two hours more than they originally committed to, to help cover the shortfall. They were champions, the lot of them.
We ended up raising approx $900. So a good take for one day’s work.
Camerata
Another big thank you to all the volunteers who helped with the Camerata interval suppers. A lovely afternoon was had by all.
IGA – Ritchies Card
Do you get your local shopping at a Ritchies IGA? If so, it would be terrific if you could please pick up on of the 100 preregistered cards that have been dropped off for Huntingtower at the office, so we can participate in the Community Benefits Scheme. They can be used at all “Ritchies” IGA stores not “IGA” or “IGA Liquor” stores.

A big thank you to Sharee Charett who has spent hours organising junior school artwork to feature on a lovely teatowel, just in time for Christmas! Friends and family will love this beautiful memento of their little one’s time at junior school.

Posted October 23 20092009 HUNTINGTOWER CAMERATA GALA CONCERT
Sunday 11 October 2.30pm – Performing Arts Centre
October 11 was a beautiful day, warm and sunny both in weather conditions and in the community feeling of our unique event, the Camerata Gala Concert. The word “Camerata” is an Italian word meaning “arts society” dating from the regular meetings of the 16th century Florentine poets, artists and musicians from whose discussions and interaction opera was developed. Huntingtower has a long tradition in outstanding “Camerata” events promoting the arts. It is sometimes difficult to envisage from within just how special our annual Camerata event is but when we read the list below (with sincere apologies for the omission of many individual names), we realize with awe the breadth of talent and dedication we have within our community and know just how much this unique happening must be nurtured.
Sincere appreciation is extended to:
- World renowned conductor Professor John Hopkins OBE, who generously donated and shared his time and his amazing musicianship, knowledge, experience and expertise to conduct the Huntingtower Camerata Symphony Orchestra and our String Orchestra of which he is a patron. What an exciting and meaningful time for our orchestral musicians who will always treasure those moments working with such a great person.
- It was also a wonderful opportunity to have our own “Huntingtower Launch” of Professor Hopkins’ newly published autobiography “The Point of the Baton”, a thoroughly entertaining and warmly written book demonstrating Professor Hopkins’ love of not only the incredible work which he does but also of the people with whom he has come in contact throughout his long, illustrious career. It was great also to have four of Professor Hopkins’ five daughters present on this special occasion (they are all old students of Huntingtower.) Special thanks also to Dr Jennifer Hill, Honourary Fellow at the Faculty of Music, University of Melbourne and co-editor of the book, for setting up photographic displys and providing copies of the book. Special thanks also to Mr John Callaway for his insightful and interesting speech to whet our appetite to read the book. If you would like to purchase the book please collect a form from Lynley Bramble in the Music Centre.
- Our two brilliant soloists, Prudence Davis (Principal Flute with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra) and Jeffrey Crellin (Principal Oboe with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra) and parents of Max and Martin Crellin, who transported us to a world of sensitive beauty, coaxing sounds from their instruments which were perfect in their expressiveness and fluency.
- Famous Australian composer Sarah Hopkins (an old student of Huntingtower) for allowing the privilege of performing her visionary amazing work ‘Honour the Earth’ complete with solo didgeridoo, harmonic whirlies, African drums and an array of percussion. It was wonderful to have Sarah at the rehearsals and performance and the audience immediately honoured the work with a rousing applause and a standing ovation. Requests have been made for recordings of Sarah’s works so if you are interested please visit the following websites: www.sarahhopkins.com or www.harmonicwhirlies.com
- All the students (from Prep to Year 12), old students, staff, friends and dedicated parents Christine Johnson, Prue Davis, Julie Payne, Christine Turpin, Keith Johnson, Jeff Crellin, Geoff Payne, Rob Clarke, Rohan Charrett and Wei Shen for contributing such wonderful individual talent, expertise and musicianship to the performances and for donating hours of private practice – what a privilege to work with such musicians.
- Our choir conductors Miss Emily Nathan and Mrs Anne Wilson for the magnificent performances of the Senior and Junior choirs.
- The wonderful, supportive members of the academic and administrative staff led by Ms Dot Greiveson, Mrs Jan Tyquin, Mrs Tansy Cruttenden and Mr Tony Hill who assisted with front of house, sound and lighting, student supervision, ticketing and printing – special thanks to Mrs Kris Bruce and Mr Geoff Hardcastle for hours of extra work.
- Our Principal Mr Sholto Bowen for his words of introduction and support.
- The members of the PTA for the provision of the delicious afternoon tea.
- Dedicated long term supporters such as Mrs Deidre Carkeek, Mrs Helen Kan and other helpers who return faithfully every year to generously contribute in so many ways.
What a memorable occasion – let us continue to preserve and promote our precious talents. Many, many thanks to you all.
SOLO CONCERTS
Several exciting concerts will be held over the next few weeks so please feel extremely welcome to attend. Year 7 musicians, Year 10 and Years Prep, 1 and 2 players will all perform so come and enjoy the wonderful array of talent.

Posted October 09 2009 Thought for the week
“Be the change you want to see in the world”
Mahatma Gandhi
Well, I am back. For better or worse I have returned from a very stimulating, enlightening and challenging period of leave. During this past term I have visited numerous schools in the USA and country Victoria, attended education conferences and international workshops for business leaders. This trip took me from Alaska to Chicago and from Houston to St Louis. California and Maine snuck in there somewhere too.
The overriding outcome has been wonderful growth of ideas and vision and the realisation that what is happening at Huntingtower is, in many ways at the forefront of educational thinking. Meeting and talking to corporate leaders from all parts of the globe including Saudi Arabia, Palestine, Israel, Lebanon, India, Japan and the USA has given me a sense of the spiritual awakening that is taking place globally. The conversations that I have had with so many people have been to do with understanding the unlimited abilities, potential and possibilities that exist when we talk to one another, listen with respect to others opinions and standpoints and remove judgement. We are quick to judge others when the only perspective we have seen is one portrayed by the media, or by an opinion given by one side only. The commonality between the true spiritual understandings of every different faith is clear. Everyone understands that it is all about love, Love and LOVE. When we realise that Love will transform everyone because it is not a human love but divine Love that is in control. All we have to do is get ourselves (personal ego) out of the way. I found that all faiths embrace this from the Muslim and Christian to the Jewish and Buddhist. To transform the world we need to understand that lifting the thinking, the life, the experience of one person will lift the consciousness of the whole world. If everyone makes it their mission to improve the lot and the spiritual understanding of those in their circle of influence, we will bring about world transformation.
Mary Baker Eddy says: “The rich in spirit help the poor in one grand brotherhood, all having the same Principle, or Father; and blessed is that man who seeth his brother’s need and supplieth it, seeking his own in another’s good.” (S & H p518). More and more we are seeing the action of the same Principle in all these religions and perspectives.
My grateful thanks go to Mr Dry for stepping in and running the school in my absence. He has clearly done a great job because everything was still where I left it when I was last here. No, that is not quite true; I left three tennis courts between the Gymnasium and the Astroturf and they are no longer there. He assures me that this was not his fault but I have insisted that he replace them. You will notice that they are going down on the end of the soccer field and of course our new aquatic centre will go where the old tennis courts were. It will not be long now and the new pool will be operational. In fact if it rains much more we won’t have to do anything, we can just swim on the oval.
We welcome back the group of students and teachers who went to France for a French immersion experience. From all accounts they had a wonderful time and learnt a great deal. Thank you to Mrs Jonas, Mrs Barker and Mr Borbely for accompanying the group and for organising things so well.
This week we welcome 20 students and two teachers from our sister school, Clairbourn which is I California. They will be having an “Aussie” experience for the next 10 days. I know that everyone will make them feel at home.
Have a wonderful final term. It will go so fast that it will be Christmas before you know it. Remember that the Senior School Speech day and Prize giving is on Saturday 5 December at 2pm and that it is compulsory for all Senior School students. All parents, grandparents, friends and neighbours are very welcome to attend, but no pets please!

Posted October 09 2009HUNTINGTOWER CAMERATA GALA CONCERT
Sunday 11 October 2.30pm – Performing Arts Centre
Please come and enjoy this magnificent concert!
We are thrilled that Professor John Hopkins OBE is coming as our Guest Conductor – what an exciting experience for our students to play under such an illustrious, famous conductor! A book of Professor Hopkin’s memoirs has recently been released and it will be a wonderful opportunity to view the amazing events in a brilliant career. The book is thoroughly entertaining and demonstrates Professor Hopkins’ warmth and love of not only the incredible work which he does but also of the people with whom he has come in contact through his long, illustrious career.
Dr Jennifer Hill, who is an Honorary Fellow at the Faculty of Music, University of Melbourne (and who is also wife of Mr Tony Hill and mum of Alex) is a co-editor of the book and we are very fortunate that she will also be at the Camerata concert.
Autographed copies of the book will be available at the concert and they will be the ideal present for all our relatives and friends!
A WARM INVITATION is extended to all members of the audience to “Meet the Conductor/Soloists/Composer/Performers” in the Orchestral Room immediately after the concert. You will be able to meet the performers and peruse the book whilst enjoying delicious refreshments.
Our world renowned soloists will be Prudence Davis, Principal Flute with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and Jeffrey Crellin, Principal Oboe with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. Prue and Jeff are both Huntingtower parents and we are so grateful to them for their willing particpation.
- An exciting work will be a short, very moving and innovative work “Honour the Earth” by famous Australian composer Sarah Hopkins, who is also a Huntingtower old student. The work has been performed throughout the entire world and it will be a wonderful privilege for us to perform it complete with solo didgeridoo, harmonic whirlies, African drums and an array of percussion. It will be an amazing visual and aural spectacle.
- Other Huntingtower parents who are also players in the Melbourne Symphony will join the huge Camerata Symphony Orchestra along with staff, old students, friends and our Senior Orchestra – what a privilege to hear such internationally renowned musicans under our own roof!
- Junior Orchestra/Little Symphony, Junior Choir, Senior Choir and Senior Orchestra will also perform.
- Come and hear your favourite exciting works including “Jupiter” from The Planets by Holst and other great works.
- The concert will be short and very easy to listen to.
- Delicious refreshments will be available.
- There will be balloons and streamers galore.
- Any proceeds will go to the Gerard van der Weide Scholarship Fund which has been set up in memory of our great friend, mentor and musician, Gerard, who led the Camerata Symphony for 5 years.
So please come and support this very special event and have a wonderful time!!
DON’T MISS IT!!
HEARTY CONGRATULATIONS
- To the small group of musicians who presented a solo and ensemble concert to a very enthusiastic audience at the Yernga Retirement Village. It is an extremely popular annual event – the children were treated like royalty and the afternoon tea had to be seen to be believed!
- To the students who were chosen to perform in the highly successful “Music in the Round” performances at Monash University on 20 September. It was a magnificent day of entertainment organised and directed by our own Huntingtower parent Jeff Crellin. Liam Oborne, Thomas Chen, Alysha Trainor, Mathew Mo and Ethan Yuen played in performances related to their participation in State Music Camp earlier in the year.
- To the students who performed in the holiday concerts. Five wonderful concerts were held during the holidays and they were enjoyed by very enthusiastic audiences. The standard throughout all concerts was amazingly high and the students were very appreciative of the opportunity to perform for the approaching VCE Music Performance and AMEB exams. It was a privilege to listen to such outstanding performances and we wish all our students the very best for the coming exams.
