 Thought for the week

There is only one person who could ever make you happy, and that person is you.
                         David Burns

“Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts”.

                         Mary Baker Eddy

Another term is drawing to a close. The students and teachers will be looking forward to a well-earned break. The very busy term that is almost finished has included so many activities that I will not attempt to detail them all here. I would like to comment on the HOSA Musical – Hello Dolly, as this was an activity that involved past students, parents, friends of the school and also a few students. This community event is another example of the way everyone contributes to bringing our family together and provides opportunities for everyone to have fun.

At the Junior School Cross Country Carnival, there were also many parents assisting and supporting. We are really grateful for your participation and support.

Congratulations to everyone involved in the Music Concert held last night. So much hard work went into preparing for the event and the standard was once again outstanding. Many thanks to Mrs Bramble, Mrs Wilson and Miss Nathan for their outstanding preparation of all the groups and to Myfanwy Bramble for her assistance.

Our Year 12 students have just completed their very challenging mid year exams. It is easy to forget that each VCE teacher takes these exams very seriously and their students’ results very personally. Their students have been schooled in the subject matter, trained in exam technique and encouraged to think like an examiner. They have worked extremely hard preparing for their exams while still having other classes continuing. They are to be congratulated on the calm way in which they tackled their exams and I am sure that we will be very happy with the results which we will receive later in the year. Grateful thanks are due to the teachers who have guided them.

Next term will see me gallivanting to warmer climes. I will be taking my sabbatical next term and am taking part in a number of international activities. These include a conference in Chicago, meetings with university leaders in St Louis and also a study opportunity as I attend the Aspen Executive Seminar.

During my absence Mr Dry will be Acting Principal and Miss Greiveson will be Acting Vice Principal. I wish them well and am sure that the school will run very smoothly. I look forward to giving you all feedback on my experiences when I return in term four.

Concert Series!
There has been an amazing series of concerts over the past month and hearty congratulations are extended to every student (over 400 students) who performed so magnificently.  As the Bulletin goes to print we will  have just experienced our magnificent Junior and Senior Orchestral  and Choral Concert.  This concert involves over 300 students from Years 3 to 12 performing in all our large orchestras, choirs and Concert Band – it is always an awe-inspiring sight to see so many young people moving quickly and quietly to their positions and then producing such high quality, beautiful music.  We are certainly extremely proud of every musician involved.

Sincere gratitude is extended to our wonderful team – Miss Emily Nathan (Senior Choral), Mrs Anne Wilson (Junior Choral), Mrs Julie Payne (Brass Ensemble) to our talented, dedicated parents and old students Chris Turpin, Julie Payne, Rob Clarke, Markiyan Melnychenko and Andrew Roe and to our very kind staff who volunteered to help organise the large number of students.

The Little Symphony and Little Choir Concert (Years Prep to 2) was sheer delight from start to finish.  It was the very first performance for some of our students including the Preps and there were constant special moments for the large enthusiastic audience.

We have also enjoyed a wonderful Junior Piano Concert, a Years 11 and 12 Concert and a Years 5 and 6 Solo Concert late last term.  We are looking forward to the Years 3 and 4 Solo Concert next week (Thursday 25 June at 6.00pm in the Orchestral Room).

Next term there will be solo performances from students in Years 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 and a Year 7 concert early in Term IV.

HOLIDAY SOLO CONCERT
Thursday 9 July – 7.00pm in the Orchestral Room.
This is an opportunity for students from any level to perform – it is an ideal occasion for musicians who may be preparing for AMEB or VCE exams or coming Eisteddfods to have an extra occasion to perform.  Please inform Lynley Bramble (BH 9807 8888 or AH 9803 7701) if you would like to perform.

Congratulations to Ethan Yuen who was awarded an Honerable Mention in the 10 years and under section and 2nd prize in the 12 years and under section at the Ringwood Eisteddfod.

Thought for the week

“Stand porter at the door of thought.”

                        Mary Baker Eddy

We may often feel under attack. This attack can take many forms. It can be financial, physical, emotional or any other of the numerous ways in which fear likes to manifest itself. At present, anyone who turns on the radio or television will clearly feel under attack by the media. We are being bombarded by suggestions of “pandemic” (global fear), and even when we are all incredulous about the minor impact of this latest disease, we are told to wait because it is going to turn into something really bad … it IS going to get worse.

Well, the media, the pharmaceutical companies, advertisers and many others all know that if we feed the fear for long enough, it will take root.

Fear is simply False Evidence Appearing Real and as WE give this false evidence the only power it has, we can equally take it away. All we need to do is replace the false suggestion with the truth. The truth is that there is no power apart from God, good, because God is omnipotent. A belief in contagion is a belief that Love is not all-powerful.

We must replace every negative thought with a positive, useful, true and helpful one before the negative thought has time to take hold in our consciousness.

Let’s all “stand porter at the door of thought” and admit only those thoughts that we want to see realised in our experience. What you focus on expands. Turn off the radio or TV when they are telling you what to think and how fearful to be. Take the action you feel is wise but let’s rise above the hype. We will do our best to ensure the safety of your children and will keep you informed of any developments or departmental instructions.

As mentioned previously, Mrs Rudd will be on Long service Leave for the second half of this year and Mrs Rickard will be on Maternity Leave.

I have pleasure in announcing that Mrs Rickard will be replaced by Miss Claire Werda and Mrs Rudd by Mrs Rebecca Sinclair. Mrs Sinclair is an experienced teacher who hails from Chile while Miss Werda is a highly energetic graduate who we are sure the children will love. I know you will all make them both very welcome.

The Senior School (Years 7 to 11) has just finished their mid-year examinations and next week the VCE students will have their turn. Those students doing Accounting, Chemistry, Physics and Biology will all have a chance to show what they can do and we wish them all success. To this end, we would appreciate a sense of calm near the Orchestral Room when picking up children so as not to distract these students. Thank you for your understanding.

I would like to remind you that full tax deductibility exists for all contributions to the building fund. If you wish to take advantage of this before the end of this financial year, please send us your contribution as soon as you can. Every dollar is gratefully received. We need to raise a considerable sum in order to complete our latest project within the expected time period.

We are very grateful to those who have already assisted and I know that you will be thrilled to see your child splashing away in our new facility.
