Posted March 20 2009Thoughts for the week
“Always remember you’re unique – just like everyone else.”
“Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you’re a mile away and you have their shoes.”
“Generally speaking, you aren’t learning much when your lips are moving.”
“A closed mouth gathers no foot.”
Recently I was pondering the statement which comes from the Bible in which Job says “(God) performeth the thing which is appointed for me to do”. The more I think about this statement the more I come to realise that when we are feeling stress or that there is just too much to do, or that we can’t cope or that everything is falling down around our heads, we are not letting God do His/Her work and are thinking that it is up to us. We must remember as Mary Baker Eddy says, “Divine Love always has met and always will meet, every human need.” Sometimes we just need to get ourselves out of the way.
Here is a lovely poem that you may enjoy:
As children bring their broken toys
With tears for us to mend,
I brought my broken dreams to God
Because he was my friend.
But then, instead of leaving Him in peace to work alone,
I hung around and tried to help
With ways that were my own.
At last I snatched them back again and cried
“How can you be so slow?”
“My child”, He said, “What could I do?”
“You never would let go.”
The recent EISM Swimming Carnival was an occasion for great celebration. Following a period of intense training, motivation, encouragement and determination, our Senior School Swimming Team won the Division One EISM Swimming Carnival. This was a decisive victory with both the girls and the boys winning their sections and of course the overall trophy. Perhaps they were spurred on by the announcement that Huntingtower is to build its own Aquatic Centre soon, but the entire team was wonderful. They did not achieve the greatest number of first place ribbons but the overall standard was so high that they accumulated the greatest number of points in each division. In the final 4 X 50m freestyle relay, out of the ten events, Huntingtower won four first places, Four seconds and Two thirds. This team effort is what has enabled us to secure our success. My grateful thanks to the team, the teachers who supported early morning training, the parents who took students to training and who have supported them for so long and to the coaches who have trained them so well. A special word of thanks to Mr Rees for his organisation and encouragement and Mrs Helen Kan who has now been training our swimmers and our team for 15 years. Mrs Kan is responsible for lifting the standard of our swimming enabling many students who previously were average swimmers to achieve levels they could previously only dream of. We are very grateful to you, Mrs Kan. I am so proud of every swimmer and of the entire team.
The House Music Festival is upon us once more. This is an event not to be missed. It will be wonderful to have every parent present to see the incredible performances of the soloists at 7.00pm on Tuesday 24 March in our Performing Arts Centre and of every student as they perform in the large groups (including the House Choirs and Orchestras) at 7.00pm on Monday 30 March at the Besen Centre in Burwood.

The Role of the PTA
As most of the recently inducted PTA Committee are new to both the PTA and to the school, it has been timely for us to understand our role. We would like to emphasise to the school community that the PTA is very much “your” PTA, encompassing all parents in the school. We are very much here to be of service to you.
The objects of the PTA are set out in its Constitution, as follows:
-
To provide a forum where parents can promote and discuss matters of interest and concern to them as parents of children attending the school.
-
To encourage, co-ordinate and unify the application of talents of parents and teachers towards the working and developing of Huntingtower and it’s students.
-
To provide appropriate activities to encourage fellowship between parents for the mutual benefit of the students, their parents and staff of the school.
-
To promote a deeper mutual understanding between parents and teachers.
-
To engage in activities to raise funds to provide needed facilities for the school.
-
To promote the school and it’s interests to all members of the community.
Ultimately, these objectives will hopefully lead to a happy and positive community environment that we can all benefit from.
Changing Names?
As suggested by Mr Bowen, the PTA Committee are currently considering a change of name from the “PTA” to the “Parents Association”. The “Parent Teacher Association” was agreed when Huntingtower was still a very small school, with both parents and teachers required to form an association. As time has gone on, membership has shifted to the parents, although of course the relationship and support of the teachers is still absolutely vital. In fact, the teachers’ ongoing support is very much appreciated and we are grateful for any help the teachers can provide.
The PTA Committee plan to propose this change of name at the next PTA meeting. We would love to have your feedback on the proposal, which would be very welcome to either Catherine Jenkins on 0417 399 594 or Brett Stringer on 0406 030 937.
Class Representative News
On Wednesday the 4 March, Fiona Knox-Johnson hosted a lovely coffee morning for the 3 year-old Pre-Prep parents, which was very well attended. It was a wonderful opportunity for the parents to get to know each other, particularly as many of the parents were new to the school. Fiona broke the ice by getting us all to take turns at answering some difficult questions drawn out of a hat – such as “Who was your hero when you were a child?” which gave us all some terrific insight into each other, as well as a good laugh. A big thank you to Fiona for taking on the class rep role.
If any other class reps have held functions, we’d be delighted to hear about it. Please contact Catherine Jenkins on 0417 399 594 or on catherine.jenkins@iinet.net.au with your story.
The Huntingtower Fete
The biggest date on the PTA calendar is fixed for Saturday the 7 November! We’re very excited to be involved this year and we’re currently getting ourselves organised. Already, we’re keen to get more stalls this year, particularly for food. If you have any ideas for a new stall, any valuable contacts or would like to volunteer to co-ordinate a stall, please contact Brett Stringer on 0406 030 937.

Posted March 05 2009Thought for the week
“Man’s goodness is a flame that can be hidden but never extinguished.”
Nelson Mandela
What do we really want from our children? Is it good marks; good sporting results; good competition results; good behaviour results, or do want them to be happy; well adjusted; confident; capable; respectful of others; caring and reliable. My belief is that by focussing on the latter set of desires we ultimately get the prior set and even if we don’t we have at least produced wonderful young people. It certainly has been our experience that the more we focus on the spiritual qualities expressed by our students and the more we see them as unlimited expressions of divine Love and divine Mind, the more these qualities come to the fore and their experience matches these expectations. I have heard it said that we do not get what we want or desire, we get what we expect – so always expect the best.
It was good to see around 240 parents and children at the PTA Welcome Picnic on Saturday 21 February. Everyone seemed to have a good time with good company, good music and great food (cooked by …). Grateful thanks to the outgoing PTA committee for organising this event. It was really good to see so many members of the new PTA committee at the event.
Thank you for coming! If you missed it, please come along next year.
I have pleasure in mentioning and congratulating the new PTA Committee for 2009.

Thank you to this wonderful team of parents who are willing to put in the extra time to help our school achieve many of its goals.
Congratulations to the Junior School on the wonderful Swimming Carnival held last week. The students were exemplary and all tried their very best. It is inspiring to see how many of our younger students can now manage a 50m race. Grateful thanks to Ms Savage and particularly Mrs Clapp for their organisation of the event. Thanks to the parent helpers and to the Junior School staff. It was great to see so many parents at the Carnival.
In the Senior School assembly this week we announced the appointment of our new “Director of Basketball”. Our “partnership” with the Melbourne Tigers has provided us with a unique opportunity to give our children the best possible coaching. Mr Ian Stacker has been coaching basketball professionally for over 25 years and he is now our Director of Basketball. He will coach the students and other coaches, and will run training clinics and programs for all school teams and the Huntingtower Heat teams. Ian is currently Assistant Coach with the 2008 NBL Champions – the Melbourne Tigers – and we will be getting his expertise at Huntingtower. We look forward to seeing Basketball flourish even more at Huntingtower.

Diary Dates:
First week in May – Mother’s Day Stall (final date TBA).
New PTA Committee
The new members of the PTA Committee met for the first time on the 25 February. We were very grateful to Judy Orford for dedicating her evening to handing over the reins, particularly as five members are new to the Committee and were full of questions.
In addition we would like to thank the outgoing members of the PTA Committee, class reps and fete reps for all of their hard work and dedication. You have all set such high standards and we pledge to continue the significant effort this year.
We have allocated the following roles within the Committee, and we look forward to working with you this year.
President – Brett Stringer
Treasurer – Sabrina Samaranayake
Secretary – Catherine Jenkins
Committee - Debbie Jones
Debbie Davey
Rahul Kapadia
We are currently finalising the fundraising and meeting calendar, which we hope to have to you shortly. Any suggestions, comments or feedback would be very much welcome (please phone Brett Stringer on 0406 030 937).
Welcome Picnic
Thank you to all involved in the welcome picnic on Saturday the 21 February, particularly the band and of course Mr Sholto Bowen, Mrs Maureen Bowen and Ms Dot Greiveson, our sausage cookers. All new parents were made to feel most welcome and part of our Huntingtower community.
Sausage Sizzle
Another thank you to all helpers at the Bunnings Notting Hill sausage sizzle, which raised over $1,000. It was also a great way to reach out to the broader community and help us in our “friend-raising” as well as “fund-raising” efforts.
Are you ready to have a go?
We are currently going through the process of finalising class and fete reps. To all of you who have already committed, a big thank you from the Committee. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Catherine Jenkins on 0417 399 594. It’s a great way to meet school parents and stay in touch with what is happening around the school
Farm Pride Eggs:
Just a reminder that our school has registered to participate in the Farm Pride and Golden Egg Farm collect-a-thon. Every token collected from Farm Pride and Golden Farm Eggs packs will earn 50c for the PTA. There is a tin in the foyer of the office, just waiting for your tokens. Please cut out the 50c tokens from your egg cartons. Proceeds will help our PTA coffers! Funds raised will go to help buy some much needed items for the ELC area.

Posted March 05 2009HUNTINGTOWR ORCHESTRAL PROGRAM
Many students from Year Prep to 12 learn orchestral instruments and participate in various ensembles throughout the school.
Little Symphony – Years Prep – 2
Junior Orchestra – Years 3 – 6
Senior Orchestra – Years 7 – 12
Middle School Orchestra – Years 7 – 9
Concert Band – Years 7 – 12
String Orchestra – Senior, Middle, Junior SchoolsThe players enjoy the excitement of performing together and they develop a high level of concentration, responsiveness and alertness which is then channelled into their academic performance. Every year many of Huntingtower’s top VCE students are also musicians (in 2004, 2006 and 2008 all students with ENTER scores over 99 were in the orchestra!) and during the presentation of academic awards for any year level the orchestral chairs seem to be empty! There are many wonderful extra curricular activities available including opportunities to attend State Music Camps and to participate in many fine youth orchestras and bands when sufficient proficiency is attained. All students at Huntingtower who learn orchestral instruments can participate in an ensemble as soon as a small degree of proficiency is achieved. At some times some advanced piano students are involved in the percussion sections of the orchestras but unfortunately it is impossible to involve all piano students as only a small number of percussion players are needed. If you do not play an instrument, now is the ideal time to start! Instruments are available to suit the needs of students throughout the school so please don’t hesitate to speak to Mrs Lynley Bramble (Director of Music) at school (Music Centre – Room MU8 or ring her after hours – 9803 7701) to discuss the availability or suitability of various instruments. (An instrument tuition form is available from the school office - this need only be filled out by students who wish to start an instrument.
Perhaps you may consider a jazzy double bass, a shiny French horn, trumpet or trombone, an oboe or bassoon, viola, violin or ‘cello – there are many possibilities so do come along and have a go!

Small Ensembles (Brass Ensembles, Stage Band, String Quartet etc)

Posted March 05 2009Keen basketball players are set to benefit from Huntingtower’s new partnership with NBL champions, the Melbourne Tigers.
The Tigers’ Assistant Coach, Ian Stacker, is lending his 25 years of professional coaching experience, to become the school’s Director of Basketball. Mr Stacker, the two-time NBL Coach of the Year, is joining forces with the school’s 22 basketball teams in the Huntingtower Heat to help foster excellence in the sport.
The 2009 program commences very soon, with a series of clinics for Year 6 and 7 students to be held on Mondays after school in March. Students can collect an application form from Ms Savage who is coordinating the school-based clinics and training programs.
This will be followed by the commencement of the preparation period for the EISM winter competition. If boys and girls wish to be considered for EISM basketball teams, they must commit to early morning trainings from 6.30-8.00am before school (Monday & Tuesday for the seniors, Y10-12, and Wednesdays for the Y8 & 9 players).
Seniors will commence on Monday, 20 April and Year 8 & 9 on Wednesday 29 April.
Various HT Heat teams will have special trainings on Monday nights, and coaches of all teams will have monthly meetings. More details will follow as the Heat teams are organised for the winter season.
Huntingtower principal, Mr Bowen, is thrilled with the school’s close association with the Tigers:
“Several Tiger’s players and the assistant coach, Warrick Giddey, have been involved in skills clinics and mentoring in our school.
“It is uplifting for our students to forge such special relationships with some of their sporting heroes and we are very grateful to the Tigers for their dedicated work with our school”.
Year 6 and 7 students at Huntingtower will be the first to benefit from the program, with training sessions beginning on March 16.
