“Judge not, that ye be not judged”
I hope to see hundreds of you at the PTA Welcome on Saturday at 5.00pm. Please bring a picnic and enjoy a delicious sausage prepared for you by Miss Greiveson and myself.
The recent events in Victoria have given us all much cause to reflect and also to respond to the needs of those affected by the bush-fires. Some respond with prayer, some by providing goods, others with money and others by physically going and working to support those in need. This is the way in which Australians respond in times of crisis and challenge. It is a wonderful trait in which our camaraderie and empathy is demonstrated. Last week we called for donations of toys for the Whittlesea Primary School as all that they had was lost. I am happy to say that the pile of toys that arrived was amazing. Thank you to everyone. Last week we had a “bring a note” day, and students and staff were asked to contribute at least $5.00. I am happy and proud to be able to tell you that we raised over $5000 from this appeal and money is still coming in. Thank you to all who helped and contributed so generously.
The issue of smoking, drinking, drugs, parties and other negative social activities is a perennial problem that we face in our society. The internet has put a whole new perspective on this. Huntingtower takes a firm stand on this issue and I thank parents for supporting us. Recently we have seen the effect of alcohol on some of our top sporting “heroes”. The media loves to embellish any of these situations. It is a pity that at the same time they do not stress to young people that they should NOT get involved with alcohol while at school. Research is clear that the younger children are when they start drinking, the more likely they are to become alcohol dependent later in life.
All of our Senior School students sign the commitment to refrain from smoking, drinking or taking illegal substances while enrolled at Huntingtower and this has not been relaxed – and will not be! 18th birthday parties are no exception.
I remind all parents (and thank them for supporting this stand), that the expectation on all Huntingtower families in regard to parties is as follows:
1. Parties will be fully supervised by parents.
2. No alcohol or other inappropriate substances will be available to students, and
3. Parties will not be “open” parties.
Please be aware that an older sibling seldom has the authority to tell anyone bringing alcohol to go away or throw the alcohol away. It is very hard for them to tell unwelcome or uninvited visitors to leave. They may often get involved in the party themselves.
Please, please, please supervise your teenage party carefully – for your own child’s safety and well-being.
I know that I am preaching to the converted and that all these things would take place anyway but occasionally we hear from our children “but everyone else is allowed to do it!” I wanted to remind all parents that they are not alone in making a stand – you know what the effects of alcohol are.
Congratulations to everyone involved in the Senior Swimming Carnival. It was a very long evening and we thank the parents for coming along and for your support and patience. The students did so well and I am grateful to Mr Rees for his organisation of the event and also all the teachers and students who worked so hard.
We wish the Year 11 group a very happy expedition to Plumbago – beyond Broken Hill.

Congratulations and welcome to the new PTA Committee: Katherine Jenkins, Debbie Davey, Brett Stringer, Debbie Jones, Sabrina Samaranayake and Rahul Kapadia were elected as committee members at the PTA Annual General Meeting held on Tuesday night. It’s grand to see a couple of Dad’s have taken up the mantle. The outgoing committee wish you all well in your PTA endeavours….
And from me… It’s over and out, after three years of ‘doing’ the PTA page. Thank you to my fellow ‘S & J’s’ and particularly to Sheree, who has been an absolute delight to work with. I leave the PTA page in the very capable hands of Katherine.

Posted February 20 2009HUNTINGTOWER ORCHESTRAL PROGRAM
Many studetns from Year Prep – 12 learn orchestral instruments and particpate in vaious ensembles throughout the school.
Little Symphony – Years Prep – 2
Junior Orchestra – Years 3 – 6
Senior Orchestra – Years 7 – 12
Middle School Orchestra – Years 7 – 9
Concert Band – Years 7 – 12
String Orchestra – Senior, Middle, Junior Schools
Various Year level Orchestras
Small Ensembles (Brass Ensembles, Stage Band, String Quarter etc)
The players enjoy the excitement of performing together and they develop a high level of concentration, responsiveness and alertness which is then channelled into their academic performance. Every year many of Huntingtower’s top VCE students are also musicians (in 2004, 2006 and 2008 all students with ENTER scores over 99 were in the orchestra!) and during the presentation of academic awards for any year level the orchestral chairs seem to be empty! There are many wonderful extra curricular activities availabvle including opportunities to attend State Music Camps and to participate in many fine youth orchestras and bands when sufficient proficiency is attained. All students at huntingtower who learn orchestral instruments can participate in an ensemble as soon as a small degree of proficiency is achieved. At some times some advanced piano students are involved in the percussion sections of the orchestras but unfortunately it is impossible to involve all piano students as only a small number of percussion players are needed.
If you do not play an instrument, now is the ideal time to start! Instruments are available to suit the needs of students throughout the shcool so please don’t hesitate to speak to Mrs Lynley Bramble (Director of Music) at school (Music Centre – Room MU8 or ring her after hours – 9803 7701) to discuss the availability or suitability of various instruments. (An instrument tuition form is attached to this newsletter – this need only be filled out by students who wish to start an instrument. (Click here to download).
Perhaps you may consider a jazzy double bass, a shiny French horn, trumpet or trombone, an oboe or bassoon, viola, violin or ‘cello – there are many possibilities so do come along and have a go!

VENUE
The very exciting second evening of the House Music Festival on Monday 30 March at 7.30pm will be held at the BESEN CENTRE at Mt Scopus College. It is also a very large hall so we do invite all parents, families, old students and friends to come and enjoy this spectacular event! There will be a comfortable seat for everyone and there is no charge. Junior School children will love the excitement of the evening and it will not be a long night. Every student in years 7 to 12 will perform in his/her House Choir and over 60 percent of the students perform in the House Orchestras (It is a COMPULSORY event for all Senior students).
Please invite all your friends and especially notify any old students whom you may know of the venue. This would be much appreciated.

SENIOR SOLO CONCERT (Years 7 to 12)
Tuesday 17 March 7.00pm Orchestral Room
You are all warmly invited to attend and hear a wide variety of enjoyable items performed by many of our talented Senior musicians. If you would like to perform and are not doing a House Music solo audition, Mrs Bramble would be thrilled to hear from you. Please write down the name and composer of the work you would like to perform and give it to her as soon as possible. This is a great opportunity to hear performers from all year levels.
HOUSE MUSIC SOLOS and INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLES Tuesday 24 March – Performing Arts Centre at 7.00pm
Please come and support your House and enjoy an amazing array of talent from our young performers. The Instrumental Ensembles will be rehearsing enthusiastically for many hours during the weekend and the solists have worked tirelessly to perfect their art. It will be a great evening!
INSTRUMENTAL AND THEORY LESSONS
Most lessons have commenced and great progress is being made! It will not be long before students who have just started an orthestral instrument will become part of one of the orchestras, Little Symphony or Concert Band. It is great fun and extremely rewarding so if you would like to learn an instrument and would like to have a look at and try out some of the available instruments please contact Mrs Bramble (AH 908 7701). It is not too late to try and all students from years Prep to 12 are very welcome.
Unfortunately there are no saxophones left buy you may like to try a shiny trumpet or oboe or bassoon (these instruments would suit older students from Years 6 to 12). If you have already put in a Music tuition form and have not had a lesson yet the lessons should start very soon.
There has been a slight delay with the service and return of some instruments and three of the instumental teachers have been touring overseas and interstate.
Theory lessons al all AMEB levels are available on Tuesday and Wednesdays after school. So please speak to Mrs Bramble if you are interested.

“Try not to become a man of success but a man of value”
Albert Einstein
Welcome back to what is going to be a wonderful, inspirational and exciting year for us all. The dramatic changes we are seeing in the world offer an opportunity for us all to lift our thinking to new levels and move beyond the old paradigm of limitation and shortage to a paradigm of infinite supply and abundance. As we give to others we realise that one can never be impoverished by giving. Mary Baker Eddy says: “Giving does not impoverish us in the service of our maker, neither does withholding enrich us.” Doing good is being in the service of God and so we can not be impoverished. It is a belief in limited supply that leads us to try and accumulate wealth rather than knowing that every day God meets our every need. It is a belief that if one person has more then another must have less that we have to remove. We must replace that old belief with one which shows that there is infinite supply for all when we understand the nature of God’s unlimited spiritual universe. “Fear not, little flock; for it is your father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.”
I would like to remind all parents of the welcome to new families BBQ on Saturday 21 February from 5 to 7pm, which is put on by the outgoing PTA. Dot Greiveson and I will cook sausages for you all and you are invited to bring a picnic along to augment the evening offering. A band will perform and it should be a relaxing way to get to meet and welcome all the new families. This is an evening for all members of our community and not just the new families. We need the existing families to be there to welcome the new ones.
Our school continues to flourish and many of you will have heard of our wonderful VCE results at the end of 2008. Huntingtower has once again been ranked academically amongst the top Co-Educational schools in Melbourne (4th or 6th depending on the criteria used). More than 40% of ENTER scores were over 90 and 74% were over 80. This once again gave us a 100% pass rate and a 100% tertiary acceptance rate (one student applied for and was accepted into the army). Four perfect scores were achieved and our Dux was Anne-Marie Johnson with an ENTER score of 99.9.
We welcome a number of new staff to the school in 2009. Mrs Rhonda Jenkin returns to Huntingtower as the Junior School Learning Enrichment teacher and 5 new teachers have joined the Senior School. Mrs Daphne Matthews will take on VCE Legal Studies and History; Mr Chris Newman will have VCE Business Management and International Studies and Mr Matthew Brown takes over the Duke of Edinburgh mantle. Miss Mary Green will replace Mrs Tenne in 2009 and Miss Emily Nathan will take over from Mrs Sutton while she is on maternity leave.
Mrs Sutton gave birth to a healthy baby girl (Chloe) during January. We wish Lisa and her husband Shaun much happiness and lots of sleep.
A special welcome is extended to all the new families who have become a part of the Huntingtower community. We trust that you and you children will have a joyous and growing time with us.
