Principal’s Message

Posted October 24 2008

Thought for the week

“They can because they think they can”.

                        Virgil

“There is no limit to what a man can do or where he can go, as long as he doesn’t mind who gets the credit.”

                        Robert Woodruff

In Matthew Chapter 7 we read: “Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgement ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.”

I always find this a salutary reminder that everyone is doing the best they can with what they know. It is so easy to criticise others, particularly the Federal government, the State Government and local government, particularly when we often don’t have all the facts at our fingertips. When we react strongly to someone else and scream and shout and blame them for the worlds ill, we do not add to the solution, we only reinforce the problem. I find it useful to constantly remind myself that it is divine Mind that is actually in control; that the wisdom of Principle is guiding and that the economy of Love will ensure that the world finds its equilibrium quickly and harmoniously.

One of Australia’s leading parenting “gurus”, Michael Grose, has released a paper on how to develop resilience in our children. He lists 7 things that some parents do that may “rob” their children of resiliency. I have listed them here for your information.

Robber Number 1:

Fight all their battles for them

Sometimes we need to intervene but must be sure that it is the last resort and not the first option. So – give kids the opportunity to develop their own resourcefulness.

Robber Number 2:

Make their problem, your problem

Sometimes parents can take too much responsibility for issues that are up to children to work out or decide. So – Make their problem, their problem.

Robber Number 3:

Give kids too much voice

Sometimes we need to make decisions for them, rather than allowing them too much of a say in every decision affecting them. So – make decisions for kids and expect them to adjust and cope.

Robber Number 4:

Put unrealistic or relentless pressure on kids to perform

Expectations about success and achievement are important. Too low and anyone can meet them. Too high and they might give up or experience anxiety. So – Keep expectations in line with what you know of your children and don’t put excessive pressure on them.

Robber Number 5:

Let kids give in too easily

Resilient learners link success with effort. They don’t give up when they don’t like a teacher or when confronted with complex activities. So – encourage kids to complete what they started even if the results aren’t perfect.

Robber Number 6:

Neglect to develop independence

Don’t wait until they are teenagers to develop the skills of independent living. So – don’t routinely do for kids what they can do for themselves.

Robber Number 7:

Rescue kids from challenging or stretch situations

There are many times that children are outside their comfort zones for a while. In fact this is when good learning has the potential to occur. So – encourage them to work through challenges.

The year 12 students are now on their study break and we wish them every success with their final school exams.

Cakes, cakes and more cakes… The home-baked goods stall is always popular. This year each child in Prep-Year 9 will bring home a ‘baking kit’.  This provides an opportunity for our budding Middle School cooks to show their stuff, and our Junior Schoolers who love to help out in the kitchen!  Please bake cakes, cookies or sweets – whatever you think will sell best. Need some ideas? What about some ‘old fashioned’ favourites – meringues, yo-yo’s, slices, etc. Each ‘baking kit’ has a plate, bag, label for listing ingredients and a detachable tag (this will be used to identify the donor – it’s a Govt. Health requirement).  Bring your goodies to the School office (Board Room) on the day before the fete (Nov 7th), this will give Year 3 Mums and Dads time to sort and price them (and store them in the refrigeration unit) ready for Saturday.  Saturday drop-off is OK, but Friday is better.  Thank you for supporting the Year 3 Cake Stall and your school!  Jillian Cookson, Carolyn Berlin and Year 3 parents

Second Hand Books and Toys: Please leave donations for the Year 6 Second Hand Books and Toys Stall in the Green Shed at the end of the carpark. Please contact Sonali on 0419 301 694 with questions or help, if you have goods that require collection.

Year 6 families will be needed in large numbers to help with setting up the book stall from lunchtime on Friday. Please put some time aside and note in your diary now.

CD’s, DVD’s VCR tapes and records (year 9): Its time to sort through your collection – this is the perfect opportunity to get rid of those you don’t want! Year 9 is collecting for the second hand stall at the fete. Leave in the box at the office.

Baskets for Silent Auction (year 7):  Your old, not too well worn cane baskets can be recycled, filled with goodies for the Silent Auction. If you have any, or can collect some, please put them aside.  Maybe you could put together a basket on a theme – a chocolate basket, garden basket, herb basket, tea drinker’s basket – let your imagination run riot!

If you own / work in a business that might be able to donate something to the silent auction, please call Carol Jones on 9887 7252 or Sharee Charrett on 9886 8704. We need gift vouchers, goods and / or dollars. All offers welcome!

Sponsorship: Thank you to those families helping us find sponsors for the fete Why not add your name and company to the growing list who will receive advertising for the next year in the school bulletin and website.

Good Quality Clean clothes and handbags (year 4): It is time you cleaned out your wardrobe …or your children’s wardrobes? Put aside clean, good quality clothes for our second hand clothes stall. Deliver to the green shed…but please, no rips, tears, stains or patches.  Contact ;Lorri-Anne Carroll 98088601.

HUNTINGTOWER CAMERATE GALA CONCERT
October 12, 2008 was a beautiful day, warm and sunny both in weather conditions and in the community feeling of our unique event, the Camerata Gala Concert.  The word “Camerata” is an Italian word meaning “arts society” dating from the regular meetings of the 16th century Florentine poets, artists and musicians from whose discussions and interaction opera was developed.  Huntingtower has a long tradition in outstanding “Camerata” events promoting the arts.  It is sometimes difficult to envisage from within just how special our annual Camarata event is but when we read the list below (with sincere apologies for the omission of many individual names), we realize with awe the breadth of talent and dedication we have within our community and know just how much this unique happening must be nurtured.
Sincere appreciation is extended to:

  • World renowned conductor, Professor John Hopkins OBE, who generously donated and shared his time and his amazing musicianship, knowledge, experience and expertise to conduct the Huntingtower Camerata Symphony Orchestra and our String Orchestra of which he is a patrom.  What an exciting and meaningful time for our orchestral musicians who will alsways treasure those moments of working with such a great person.
  • Our two brilliant soloists – pianist, Julie Haskell (Mum of Lucy and Fiona van der Weide) who transported us to a world of sensitive beauty coaxing sounds from the piano which were just perfect in their expressiveness and fluency.  And trumpeter, Geoffrey Payne (Dad of Lauren and Grace) who dazzled us with his brilliant flawless technique and moved us to the height of emotion with his golden, pure sound.
  • Mr John Bruce for his countless years of selfless, generous contribution to Huntingtower.  The wonderful buildings which we all enjoy are a living testament to his amazing talent and dedication.
  • The premier performance of “One Song” written by Kate Lawson-Gould and sung beautifully by Philip Gould (parents of Hamish) and Australian operatic star Margaret Haggart.  What a wonderful treat!
  • All the students (from Year Prep to Year 12) old students, staff, friends and dedicated parents Christine Johnson, Prue Davis, Carolyn Berlin, Julie Payne, Christine Turpin, Rob Clarke and Rohan Charrett for contributing such wonderful individual talent, expertise and muysicianship to the performances and for donating hours of private practice, what a privilege to work with such musicians.
  • Our choir conductors Mrs Lisa Sutton and Mrs Anne Wilson for the magnificent performances of the Senior and Junior choirs.
  • The wonderful, supportive members of the academic and administrative staff led by Ms Dot Greiveson, Mrs Jan Tyquin, Mrs Tansy Cruttenden and Mr Tony Hill who assisted with front of house, sound and lighting, car parking, decorating, student supervision, ticketing and printing – special thanks to Mrs Kris Bruce and Mr Geoff Hardcastle for hours of extra work.
  • Our Principal Mr Sholto Bowen for his words of introduction and support.
  • The members of the PTA for the provision of the delicious afternoon tea.
  • Dedicated long term supporters such as Mrs Deidre Carkeek, Mrs Helen Kan and other helpers who return faithfully every year to generously contribute in so many ways.
  • Special guest musicians such as old student Anna Maguire, Julian Bugden and others who especially travelled from interstate to perform.

What a memorable occasion – let us continue to preserve and promote our precious talents.
Many, many thanks to you all.

SOLO CONCERTS
Several exciting concerts will be held over the next few weeks so please feel extrememly welcome to attend.  Year 7 musicians, Junior wind, Year 10 and Year Prep, 1 and 2 players will all perform so come and enjoy the wonderful array of talent.

Please come and enjoy performances of enjoyable, light, popular music by our Middle School Orchestra, Concert Band and Senior Orchestra.

Principal’s Message

Thought for the week

“There are two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle and the other is as though everything is.”

                                    Albert Einstein

“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”

                                    Winston Churchill

What amazing generosity we have experienced lately. The Friends of Simunye which was held during the last holidays was an opportunity for a number of teachers, parents and friends to support neddy communities in South Africa. They have returned with wonderful stories of the work they were able to do, the lives they have impacted and the way in which their own lives have been changed.

The generosity of so many parents in giving to the Fete is also really appreciated. Some have sponsored rides and donated gifts for the Silent Auction, which others have given many hours to preparing for this annual event. We are still in need of people to help with stalls, to donate gifts, books and any other paraphernalia. If you have anything that you can give please bring it to the school as soon as you can. If your business would like to sponsor a ride in return for advertising, please contact us so that we can let you know how to go about it. If in doubt please just send a cheque to the Huntingtower PTA, indicating that the money is to sponsor a ride or activity. Sponsorship starts at $250 and has no upper limit; you may add as many zeros to the $250 as you wish.

If you have a silent auction item, please let the office know or just drop the item or items in at the office. If it is a holiday home or a car, please just drop the keys off.

The PTA and the Fete Committee have worked tirelessly to make this fete special and so if you are contacted by your class representative and asked to help, please be generous.

Finally, please all come to the fete on Saturday 8 November and bring as many people along as you can. It will be a wonderful, fun, family day.

Our Year 12 class have their last day on Wednesday 22 October and start their exams the following week. Their Valedictory Dinner is being held on Thursday night 23 October at the Golden Sands Reception Centre. We wish them every success with their exams and know that they will have done the best they can, whatever the outcome.

We welcome back those involved in both the European Cultural trip and the Exchange to Clairbourn. Both groups seem to have had a wonderful time. Grateful thanks to Mr Fletcher for his organisation of the European trip and Mr Rees for his leadership and organisation of the Clairbourn trip.

This term always flies past incredibly fast and before we know it, it will be Christmas. Exams start for the Senior School students on 17 November (for Year 10) and the others follow shortly thereafter. Have a wonderful and successful final term of 2008.

Sholto Bowen

Six wonderful concerts were held during the holidays and they were enjoyed by very enthusiastic audiences.  The standard throughout all concerts was amazingly high and the students were appreciative of the opportunity to perform in preparation for approaching VCE Music Performance and AMEB exams.  It was a privilege to listen to such outstanding performances and we wish all our students the very best for the coming exams.

SOLO CONCERTS
We are really looking forward to many solo concerts this term and any concerts which are unable to be scheduled will be held very early in 2009.

MUSIC IN THE ROUND / WAVERLEY EISTEDDFOD SHOWCASE CONCERTS
Hearty congratulations to our two ensembles who performed in the highly successful “Music In the Round” performances at Monash University on 21 September.  It was a magnificent day of entertainment organised and directed by our own Huntingtower parent Jeff Crellin.  Our Middle School Ensemble, Liam Oborne, Max Crellin, Martin Crellin, James Zhou, Ben Loveland, Hamish Roe and Eloise Verbeek were able to enjoy a wonderful lunch and a feast of other performances.  The Senior ensemble, Tom Lo, Jason Huang and Sam Hodson had to rush off to perform at another Waverley Eisteddfod Prizewinners’ Showcase Concert at the Monash Civic Centre – quite an achievement for one afternoon!

SENIOR SCHOOL SPORT – being Sun Smart
All students who play softball, cricket and tennis are required to wear the school cap for all sport sessions.  Students may obtain a cap from the HT Shop.  Students who haven’t got a cap by the third week will be issued with a school cap and the cost of this will be to the student’s account.

LOST PROPERTY
There is an increasing amount of unnamed clothing appearing in the ‘lost property’ collection at the Senior Gym.  Clothing can be returned to owners more readily if named.  Please would parents check that all uniform items are named, and from time to time, check that names are still legible.
Yours in Sport
