WAVERLEY EISTEDDFOD

Hearty congratulations and sincere thanks must be given to the 250 students who participated in the Waverley Eisteddfod. The high quality of music making and the exceptional standard achieved by every student is amazing. Hours of hard work and commitment have been given by all students and their individual and combined dedication is thoroughly appreciated.

On Friday 20 August the Huntingtower Senior Chamber Choir and Middle School Chamber Choir both sang superbly in the Secondary Chamber Choir section. Hearty congratulations to the choristers and sincere gratitude to Mrs Sutton and Rhianwen Bramble for their thorough and enthusiastic preparation of the choirs. The behaviour and concentration of every student was amazing – we are all extremely proud of and grateful to you all.

On Saturday 21 August 250 Huntingtower instrumentalists from Years 3 to 12 performed magnificently in the Ensemble sections. Enormous appreciation is extended to our dedicated, hard working staff, Ms Greiveson and her Junior School team who came on the weekend to support and supervise the Junior students. Enormous thanks also to Mrs Sutton and Mrs Barker who came to support and help supervise the Senior students.

The following results were achieved:

1.      Secondary Chamber Choirs

2nd prize – Huntingtower Senior Chamber Choir

2.      14 years and under Large Ensemble

1st prize – Huntingtower Middle School Orchestra

3.      15 years and under Small Ensemble

1st prize – Huntingtower Beethoven Quartet

2nd prize – Huntingtower Vivaldi Ensemble

4.      18 years and under Large Ensemble

1st prize – Huntingtower Britten String Orchestra

2nd prize – Huntingtower Irish String Orchestra

Five other Huntingtower ensembles performed superbly and received excellent reports and marks from the adjudicator. The 50 strong Junior Orchestra and the Concert Band (with 50 Senior players) both played with a high degree of musical maturity and expression. The Mendelssohn Quintet and Beethoven Trio performed with great integrity and passion and the Junior Ensemble was amazing in the clarity of technique which each player produced. Hearty congratulations to you all!

We are thrilled that Professor John Hopkins OBE is coming as our Guest Conductor – what an exciting experience for our students to play under such an illustrious, famous conductor!

Our first guest soloist will be Julie Raines, Principal Harp with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra who returns to play for us by popular demand after her magnificent performance several years ago. What an opportunity for our students to sit so close to such a talented harpist and be able to observe every intricacy of harp technique. Our other soloist will be the charismatic tuba player Per Forsberg who will charm the audience with his resonant sound.

Other renowned musicians and Huntingtower parents from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra will perform in the huge Camerata Symphony Orchestra. Senior Choir, Senior Orchestra, Junior Choir and Little Symphony will also perform.

The program will include Bizet’s colourful Carmen Suite, the exciting Polovtsian Dances by Borodin and other enjoyable works by Fauré and Vaughan-Williams.

DON’T MISS IT!

The following for the wonderful recent events or events to come:

1. The VCE Piano Trio (Jacob Davey, Elliot Kitchingman, Eloise Verbeek) for being chosen to perform at the inaugural Showcase Concert for the South Eastern Arts Festival. The VCE Trio will also perform at a special church service for Australian Women to be held at High Street Road Uniting Church next Friday.

2. The 14 Huntingtower students who were chosen to attend the State Music Camp which was held at Caulfield Grammar, Caulfield during the first week of the school holidays. Two hundred students attended from all over Melbourne and Victoria and a very exciting concert (4 orchestras performing) was held at Robert Blackwood Hall at the conclusion of the camp.

STRING ORCHESTRA TOUR OF NEW ZEALAND – JULY 2010

The Huntingtower String Orchestra has just returned from a magnificent 10 day tour of New Zealand. It was such a wonderful experience to see this beautiful country in the grandeur of winter and to meet so many warm, friendly, enthusiastic people. The days were packed with excitement (from floods and landslides to soothing hot spring swims and Hangi feasts) and the five concerts were all received with standing ovations from the large audiences. It was a humbling experience to have the privilege of performing in such amazing venues for such friendly audiences and also to be able to perform with our soloists Prudence Davis (Principal Flute – MSO) and Jeffrey Crellin (Principal Oboe – MSO). The purity and beauty of the sound produced by Prue and Jeff in the huge cathedrals will be something which we will always cherish.

A huge thank-you to Prue and Jeff for their wonderful musicianship and camaraderie (and love of games – ask Jeff for a game of “Haunted House” or “Upbeat” and he’ll keep you occupied for hours!) and also to Helen Tillinh for her constant care of us all and to Rob Kitchingman for his wonderful interpretative and management skills and his Kiwi sense of humour which kept us all entertained!

Another huge and special thanks to the students – we could not have asked for anything better in any way – you were all magnificent!! (not to forget our 3 “old” students who kept us on our toes!)

There has been an amazing series of concerts over the past month and hearty congratulations are extended to every student (over 400 students) who performed so magnificently. We have just experienced our magnificent Junior and Senior Orchestral and Choral Concert. This concert involved over 300 students from Years 3 to 12 performing in all our large orchestras, choirs and Concert Band – it is always an awe-inspiring sight to see so many young people moving quickly and quietly to their positions and then producing such high quality, beautiful music. We are certainly extremely proud of every musician involved.

Sincere gratitude is extended to our wonderful team – Mrs Lisa Sutton (Senior Choral), Miss Emily Nathan (Junior Choral), Mrs Julie Payne (Brass Ensemble), Rhianwen Bramble (Middle School Chamber Choir), our talented parents and old students Prue Davis, Chris Turpin, Julie Payne, Geoff Payne, Rob Clarke, Per Forsberg and Christian Smith and to our vey kind staff who volunteered to help organise the large numbers of students.

The Little Symphony and Little Choir Concert (Years Prep to 2) was sheer delight from start to finish! It was the first performance for some of our students including the Preps and there were constant special moments for the large, enthusiastic audience. Sincere appreciation is extended to Miss Emily Nathan for her wonderful work with the Little Choir.

The Year 3 and 4 Solo Concert was held this week and hearty congratulations is extended to all our talented musicians who performed so well as soloists and also in the Year 3 and 4 Orchestra.

We also enjoyed a wonderful Junior Piano Concert, a Year 11 and 12 Concert and a Year 5 and 6 Solo Concert late last term.

Next term there will be solo performances from students in Years 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 and a Year 7 concert early in Term 4.

HEARTY CONGRATULATIONS TO……….

  1. The Citizenship Ensemble who performed beautifully at the recent Citizenship Ceremony at the Robert Blackwood Hall. It is a great privilege to be involved in such an important occasion when 500 people accept Australian citizenship. Our students were greeted enthusiastically with flag-waving and cheers.
  2. The AMEB Theory students who performed so well at the recent exams – Distinctions (over 90%) were received by Bareetu Aba-Bulgu, Philip Chen and Luke Thiagarajah. High Distinctions (over 95%) were received by Yoo Jung Hur and Katherine Rozycki.
