VOLLEYBALL SCHOOLS CUP 27 – 29 JULY
A dedicated group of girls in Years 10 & 11 recently represented Huntingtower in the 2018 Three Day Schools Cup which was held from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 July, with more than 170 teams from 36 Schools competing. We would like to congratulate the girls and their coach Rob Apps who gave up many hours of their own time to prepare for the competitions. It was exciting to see the team improve and excel with each game they played.
Coach's Report - Rob Apps
Recently the Year 10 and 11 Girls Volleyball players - next year's potential 1st Girls EIS Volleyball team -decided they would like to increase their skills and start their premiership defence by entering the Volleyball Victoria Schools Cup tournament.Huntingtower had only entered this tournament once before in 2016.
Huntingtower has won the last three Girls EIS Senior Volleyball premierships and to their credit our next budding team is keen to maintain that supremacy and uphold the tradition established by our previous teams.
The girls were entered in the challenging Girls Year 11 Division 2.This division featured teams who had all been regular participants at this tournament and all the teams had a sprinkling of players from Victoria State League Teams.
The girls were challenged by this and while they were able to compete with these teams during the games they were not able to break through for that elusive win. They played off for the Bronze Medal with Wesley College and while they were able to secure the 1st set Wesley proved too consistent and were able to secure the next two sets and the bronze medal.
While this may not seem to be the best result what must be acknowledged was the progressive improvement in the girl's skills, teamwork and an ability to play at a level that they had not been exposed too before. Also, their enthusiasm and application to their improvement was fantastic and they should be very proud of their efforts. From what I have heard despite the challenges of this tournament the girls are considering entering the Australian Volleyball Schools Cup.This event occurs in December in Melbourne and features over 520 teams. It is the biggest school sporting event in the Southern Hemisphere.
Thank-you to the girls for their commitment to training and their efforts at the tournament – they could not be faulted. Thanks also to Tegan Smart for her organisation skills and captaincy and Miss Buhagiar for her support for the girls' entry into the tournament.
The girls have taken an enormous step towards defending their premiership. We can't wait for next year's EIS season!
