WAVERLEY EISTEDDFOD – now entitled "The Monash Youth Music Festival"

Hearty congratulations and sincere thanks must be given to the 200 students who participated in the Monash Youth Music Festival. The high quality of music-making and the exceptional standard achieved by every student is amazing. Hours of hard work and commitment have been given by all students and their individual and combined dedication is thoroughly appreciated.

On Saturday 11 August 150 Huntingtower instrumentalists performed magnificently in the Ensemble sections. Unfortunately very large groups were unable to perform this year (the PAC was not yet available) but as many students as possible performed in smaller ensembles.

On Monday 20 August the Huntingtower Senior Chamber Choir and Middle School Chamber Choir both sang superbly in the Secondary Chamber Choir section. Hearty congratulations and sincere gratitude to Mrs Sutton, Rhianwen Bramble and the choristers for their thorough and enthusiastic preparation. The Senior Chamber Choir had the honour of receiving the special Howard Friee Perpetual Trophy.

The behaviour and concentration of every student in every section was amazing – we are all extremely proud of and grateful to you all.

The following wonderful results were achieved:

IPSHA CHORAL FESTIVAL

On Wednesday 15 August, the Junior Chamber Choir travelled in the early morning to the Melbourne Town Hall to take part in a very exciting rehearsal with 11 other Junior choirs to prepare for the even more exciting evening performance! Our Junior Chamber Choir sounded superb and sang the Maori Lullaby with great expressive beauty and "Crocodile" with energy and humour! The combined choir with all participating schools was a great experience and hearty congratulations must be extended to Ms Carly Major Gough for her outstanding work with the choir.

FESTIVAL OF ORCHESTRAS

Last Friday and Saturday we were extremely privileged to be able to host a visit by a wonderful orchestra from Taoyuan City in Taiwan. The players attend a specialist music school where many hours a day are devoted to the study of two instruments, aural and theory training, musicology and ensemble rehearsals in addition to academic studies.

Our own students enjoyed sharing a wonderful Chamber Music concert on Saturday morning when 3 groups from Taoyuan Municipal Chung Hsing High School and 4 groups from Huntingtower all performed superbly to each other and to a very enthusiastic audience.

The Chung Hsing High School students then participated in a very entertaining masterclass which was led by Prudence Davis (Principal Flute in the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra) and Merewyn Bramble (Principal Viola in the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra). The standard of playing was amazing and Prue and Merewyn invented some very innovative ways to convey their ideas to the non-English speaking performers – the audience were very amused!

Two evening concerts were held in our Performing Arts Centre so that the String and Symphony Orchestras from Chung Hsing School could combine with performers from our own Senior Orchestra, Concert Band, Middle School Orchestra and Touring String Orchestra. In between concerts a sumptuous dinner was enjoyed by the players and the extremely large audience and there was a great feeling of camaraderie between the players from both countries. Some of our own students were an enormous help in translating "on the spot" and Selena Yeh (Year 10) especially welcomed our guests as her family is from Taiwan. An enormous thank-you to Selena, Mia Wu, Isabella Hu and Fanry Shen for their entertaining translations and also to Ronald Liao who played his trombone in the Chung Hsing Orchestra!

It was a great honour to host such a talented group of young people and their visit certainly created a warm feeling of communities coming together with a mutual purpose. Viva La Musica!
